My Grandfather was in the 6th QIB, and served in the Transvaal and Orange Free State areas.
My question is, why is there a tick in the 'Belmont' column of his Service Roll ? I do not believe he was there (unless enrolled under a different name).
I am aware it is a common question, but have not seen the actual answer anywhere !
I looked through various other contingent service rolls, but not every one has the 'Belmont' tick !! Should he have that clasp ?

The "tick" under the clasp heading "Belmont" on a roll page usually indicates the medal in question was issued or something similar. The time and place qualification for "Belmont" is 23/11/99 and for troops under Lord Metheun's command who were North of Witteputs on the indicated date. 6th QIB - whilst a splendid outfit - did not hit the scene until about May, 1901.
Your question did arise a short while ago in regard to an item in a Spink Auction.

IL.

Welcome to the forum, Steve.

I totally agree with IL's answer. The issue also arises at the other end of the medal roll where the Natal column was used for similar purposes, causing similar uncertainty.

Kind regards
