Good Morning Everyone...…

For your viewing pleasure:

I have heard of duplicate medals being re-issued if the originals were lost due to enemy actions, i.e. During WW1 if your kit was on a ship that was sunk or you were captured and your gear was lost etc.....

I have also heard and seen photos where when the duplicate medals were issued there is a letter "D" stamped near the suspension of the replacement medal.....

Now this is the first time in my collecting lifetime that I have ever seen the following:

QUEEN'S AND KING'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL

4855 PRIVATE F. HARTLEY, 2nd BATTALION, SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY
BARS: CAPE COLONY / PAARDEBURG / DRIEFONTEIN / JOHANNESBURG
&
4855 PRIVATE F. HARTLEY, 2nd BATTALION, SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY
BARS: SOUTH AFRICA 1901 / SOUTH AFRICA 1902

Both medals are also impressed after the name and unit with the word "DUPLICATE".....

I have never seen this before ….. Have you ?????

Mike

Never. I didn’t think they started doing that till decades later. Any clue on the rolls? Is it WW1 style naming?

Many years ago, in 1980 I came across a QSA to a Tpr. J.Simmonds of the SALH; edge marked "Replacement" in parenthesis.

Certainly a very unusual pair, Mike.

There's nothing on the rolls so perhaps there were created ofter they stopped updating the original rolls, so quite late?

There is an interesting thread on BMF with regards to Replacement and Duplicate medals especially the dates issued...... Looks like my pair were issued in the 1970's......
