Hi Shaun
I'm looking forward to reading your write up on Yabba.
What a character, did he have a short fuse?:)
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hi Shaun,
Bet you could write a book on this character!
Look forward to hearing more.
Cheers Steve

Thanks Everyone; I'm really looking forward to this write-up and suspect it may take a while ;-)

He must have had a very interesting life story as he's the only non-sportsman or administrator, that I know of, to have a statue on a sporting ground (hallowed turf here in Australia).

Thanks.

Glad to see that it went to a good home! I ran across "156 Tpr. S. Gascoigne's" QSA in a Sydney Antique shop back in 1980 for the princely sum of $80. In those days, about the only ABW references available were Hayward's Reprint of SAFF (he rates a mention) and The Times History. PRO research was a long process and enlistment papers might have existed somewhere. Stirling's opus was simply noticeable by its absence.
Years after the whole of my first QSA collection was sold to Spink/Noble, I saw a newspaper reference to "Gabba" which mentioned his time in the Boer War. It belatedly clicked.
When I got back into the game, I have kept an eye open for Gascoigne's QSA continually.
There will be plenty on "Gabba" on line and a pre-WW2 newspaper trawl should turn up some gems.
Regards
IL.

Hi IL,

Thanks for the kind words and history; I really like the way we are only ever custodians of their medals and over time they migrate to various collections; the history of that alone is special.

For your information I very recently acquired the medal and their was no mention to Yabba in the description, it took a bit of pre-auction detective work to pull it all together; but one other bidder was in the know and almost took me to my limit.

Thanks again.
