A scarce QSA to a Gunner in the 14th Co WD, RGA who served at Wepener.
James Palfrey attested in the RA at Crownhill Fort on 13 January 1890, aged 19 and a labourer by trade. He served for 15 years being discharged medically unfit on 24 December 1906 in Plymouth. Having originated from Somerset he went on to reside in Bristol.
His military service was not without its problems. Whilst serving in Guernsey he deserted for 40 days and served 28 imprisonment as his punishment. His character seemingly reformed, he was in receipt of good conduct pay by 1894, perhaps influenced by his Jamaican surroundings?
From Jamaica he went to South Africa in 1897 and stayed there for nearly 5 years. He earned the QSA and KSA during the Boer War.
He died in August 1912 in Bristol.
If anyone has his KSA, please let me know.
