I was fortunate to obtain the medal of Private F J Pickman in the Jack Webb auction together with Pickman's original diary which was subsequently published by Geoffrey Moore as "Pickman's Progress". This included a newspaper cutting from the Draper's Record of June 23rd 1900 which reproduced a letter from Private Pickman to his father dated May 14th 1900. This mentions that a portrait of Mr Frederick Pickman had appeared in The Draper's Record of January 13th 1900.

This was a CIV reference that I had not come across before and of great interest as a separate portrait of Pickman did not appear in the City Press CIV souvenirs although he is seen in a group photo in The Transvaal in War and Peace by Neville Edwards. With the very kind assistance of Kirsty McGregor, the editor of Drapers (the successor to The Drapers Record), and Susanna Cordner and Leah Gouget-Levy at the Archives of the London College of Fashion who sent me photos of the relevant issue at a time of much reduced access due to Covid. The article contains several other CIV portraits and information on the Draper's trade contribution which I thought might be of interest to other CIV enthusiasts so I have reproduced them here.

What a find! Lovely stuff.

Having Pickman's actual medal is a significant acquisition.

A lovely medal and even better result - a recent auction contained a CIV collection for sale - I wonder how many, if any, can be married to these photos?

Regards

Rory
