HMS Dwarf served between November 1899 and June 1902. She was commanded by Lieutenant H F Shakespeare and Lieutenant W N England.

Joseph Fletcher Payton was born in Abingdon, Berkshire, on 31 May 1866 and joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 21 November 1891. Advanced Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class on 19 November 1898, he joined HMS Dwarf on 31 August 1899, and served in her during the Boer War. Promoted Engine Room Artificer 1st Class on 21 November 1903, he was shore pensioned, time expired, on 23 November 1913.

Following the outbreak of the Great War Payton was recalled to the service on 2 August 1914, and served throughout the Great War in a variety of ships and shore based establishments. He was shore demobilised on 23 September 1919.

Noonan's say MID not traced.

Warren Guy Westcott was born on 19 August 1874 and qualified as M.R.C.S. Eng. and L.R.C.P. Lond. in 1897 before joining the Royal Navy as a Surgeon at Haslar Hospital on 8 November 1898. He was promoted to Staff Surgeon on 8 November 1906, and to Surgeon Commander on 8 November 1914. He served aboard Dwarf on the Cape station from August 1899 to May 1902.

During the Great War he served in HMS Yarmouth 1914-17, HMS Edgar 1917-18, and HMS Monarch 1918-19.

He was placed on the Retired List in 1920 and died on 28 May 1944.

Arthur William Henry Hook was born at Northfleet, Kent on 6 July 1875, the son of Arthur and Jane Hook and enlisted with the Royal Marines at Chatham on 31 October 1893. His first posting afloat was with Sybille and on the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War he was stationed with Nile. Hook was posted to Dwarf on 5 April 1902 and like the rest of the crew earned a no-clasp medal for his service within the warzone. After the war he saw further service, largely with Britannia and the Plymouth Division, finally being discharged on 1 November 1905. He settled back at Northfleet and was still living there in 1939 at 6 Portland Road, Hook died on 24 January 1950.
