This appears to be William James Garman. Born 1874 in New Castle, Norwich.

Service papers exist for him. These are available free from the National Archives and at cost from FindMyPast.

QSA (3) Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Transvaal (1506 Pte. L. Edwards, Norfolk Regt.)

Roll states ‘To England Invalided 9.3.01’. He is commemorated on a brass memorial plaque in Norwich Cathedral, date of death not known.

The shipping lists show that the Oratava embarked 23 officers and 516 men of the 3rd Norfolks at Queenstown on 24th February 1900
The qsa medal roll suggests that in SA the 3rd Norfolks were augmented by c.200men of the 2nd Norfolks and c.120 men of the 4th Norfolks.

George Cunningham was born in the Parish of Hetherset, Norfolk, and attested for the Norfolk Regiment at Wymondham on 24 December 1889, aged 18 years 2 months. He served in India from 30 September 1891 to 20 January 1898, and was attached to the Telegraph Department in the Waziristan campaign of 1894-95. He served in South Africa from 4 January 1900 to 25 July 1902, and was discharged on 26 July 1902.

QSA (3) Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Johannesburg (2215 Pte S. Smith. Norfolk Regt)

Spink say 168 'Paardeberg' clasps to unit.

S. Smith served with the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment during the Second Boer War. Arriving in South Africa in January 1900 the Regiment joined the advance on Bloemfontein as part of 14th Brigade. During the Battle of Paardeberg this unit was charged with ensuring that reinforcements did not aid in any attempted breakout though they were not engaged in the battle on the attack upon Conje's lagger. Smith is noted in the medal roll as being discharged on 22 July 1903.

John Freestone was born in Dereham, attested for Militia 12/4/97 aged 17, embodied for Boer War 25/1/00, disembodied 22/7/00 and discharged 11/4/03.
