Thomas Lake has a 1897 Jubilee Medal for the Metropolitan Police named PC T Lake P Divn. I have searched on The National Archives but am struggling to navigate the police records, although there seem to be a few there. I can work out that (from MEPO 4. No. 6) Thomas Lake, warrant number 81793, joined on 28 Dec 1896, and left on 17 Feb 1900. He was last posted to P Division as a PC. I have found reference to this being Camberwell. The dates line him up with this Jubilee Medal, and also his going to the Boer War.

Thomas Lake served in Loch's Horse in the Boer war from 15 March 1900. I do not know when he left, but he got a Coronation Medal 1902. It has been very neatly engraved in block capitals T Lake. Were the police ones named?

He then goes on to get a 1911 Coronation Medal as well, named to PC T Lake.

I can't find anything on him returning to the police but am not sure how to search. Everything leads me back to the single record and there isn't a real search?

I know that the attestation papers are there in MEPO 4/361-477 but there isn't a search page I can find? Doing a general search with his warrant number just gives me that original record above

Anyone have any hints please on how to search the Met Police data?

I have found a bit more. In MEPO 4/347/19 he is listed as leaving again, as Thomas Lake, warrant number 87478. Joined on 27 May 1901, and left on 9 April 1923. Last posted to N Division as a PC.

This would likely put him back in the police for the Coronation. He didn't serve long in the Boer War then.

Nice group Ryan - in the past, when I have ventured into the waters of the Met. I have been "aided and abetted" by Odin over on the BMF - a "fundi" on the subject and an author of a book covering their exploits.

Perhaps send him a PM?

Regards

Rory

Loch's Horse were recruited in England in 2/1900 and WO100/258 shows he served in B Sqn. with shown clasps and no marginal note. Police Jubilee and Coronation medals are something I have no knowledge about - but a check just now in a copy of the Medal Year Book does not show any notation about them being named.
Good luck with your search.
Regards
IL.

Hi Ryan
I found a pension record 26059
Confirms he rejoined on 27th May 1901 at Scotland Yard
Note suggests he was a PC in NTPEB (Not a clue?)
25 years service. Aged 47 when he left as a PC North Islington.
He was born in Otterly St Mary Devon 18th September 1875
5 foot 9 inches tall
Fair Hair
Grey Eyes
Fresh complexion.
Married to Harriett, lived at 177 West Green Road Tottenham London.
Annual pension was £153 pounds 13 shillings and 5 pence.
His Superintendent on sign off looks like J Wilson.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave
