I thought I would ask forum members advice before I take a very expensive plunge. I have a pair to Nursing Sister Julia Nettie Underwood who was awarded the RRC when a nurse in Ladybrand. The RRC had gone AWOL by the time I acquired the medals from the family and I have been searching for one ever since. I am now in negotiations to buy one (see photo below)

The vendor states that:

Royal Red Cross, R.R.C. 1st Class, VR, Queen Victoria Issue, in Silver Gilt and enamels. Extremely rare, only 112 made in Silver Gilt, with 212 made during the Victorian Period.

But my question is: Is this the correct one for my nurse?

Any and all input appreciated.

Regards

Rory

If she got it in 1899, 1900 or 1901 then silver gilt and Victorian is correct. So a South African Boer War one would never likely be gold, but silver gilt or a later Edward one.

Good luck, it is an expensive item!
