Dr. J. Vrolik, 1912 (Neerlandia, Jaargang 17, p284)

In 1906 J. Vrolik became the third editor of De Afrikaner newspaper in Pietermaritzburg, following in the wake of J.S.B .Rabie of Land en Volk (owned by Eugene Marais) fame. The newspaper was the successor to the Natal Afrikander, which ran from 1887 to 1904 and although it was very pro-Afrikaner, was fairly outspoken against Paul Kruger’s government and its policies. As far as I could ascertain, he remained in this roll as editor till 1918.

With John Herschensson (owner of De Afrikaner) as temporary chair and himself as secretary, Vrolik was prompted by Ben Vorster to send out an invitation for the establishment of Organiesasie vir Hollandse Taalvriend in Natal. The meeting took place on the 29th February 1908 in Langmark street Pietermaritzburg, with Ds. Pellissier being chosen as chair and Adv. E.G. Jansen as vice-chair. In later years, all these gentlemen would become prominent leaders in the establishment of Afrikaans and stout supporters of Gen. Hertzog and his government.

Any additional information on Vrolik will be greatly appreciated.
