QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL
CONDITION:NEF
CLASPS:CAPE COLONY (entitlement confirmed WO100/239)

In reading and submitting posts to the forum for the Cape Colony Cyclists Corps, I note that around 1000 men attested to the CCCC. Fellow forummers have also made me aware of other units such as the English Cycle Corps and the Scottish Cycle Corps, both of which would be a scarce acquisition.
I have recently been lucky enough to have acquired the above mentioned QSA to J. D. Preiss of the Southern Province Cycle Corps. This is the first medal named to this unit I have encountered.

Very briefly, Johan Dan Preiss was born on 7th February 1880, the third child of Johan Dan Preiss and Sophia Marais.
He also served previously during the Boer War as 56 Private J. D. Preiss with the Robertson Town Guard (WO100/285). When researching the medal rolls for both Robertson Town Guard and Southern Province Cycle Corps, you will notice that a J. J. Preiss served with both units. Could J. J. be a brother or father or son? Additionally, there were no less than five men bearing the surname Swart who also served in both units, almost certainly related and, no doubt very good acquaintances of the Preiss'.
WO100/239 lists a maximum of 46 men who served with the SPCC that could be entitled to the QSA.
Johan Dan Preiss died on 10th April 1963.

Nice medal. Not likely to see another for a while I expect.

Hi Steve
I found this medal roll to a JJ Preiss 56 who served in the Worcester District Mounted Troops. Interestingly his number is JD's, wonder if its the same man ? They have to be related, number' 56/57 and 1025/1026
Nice medal to a cycling corps, many thanks for sharing.

Medal Roll W0100/286 Dated 11th December 1907 Worcester.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hi Steve,

Wow, I am glad I stumbled onto your post. Johan Daniel Preiss was my great grandfather's cousin. J.J.Preiss, of which there are a couple of in my family, is likely Johan Jacob Preiss, he was a Captain in the Boer War and served the British Cavalry, I need to do more research on him. I believe he would have been Johan Daniel Preiss's Uncle. He had a son with the same name, born in 1885.

Thanks for sharing, I'm chuffed I saw your post. If you wouldn't mind sharing any info with me, that you may have dug up on either of them, it would be so appreciated.

Warm Regards,
Gareth Preiss

Hi Gareth,
I'm glad you stumbled across this thread aswell!
You have added to my knowledge of your relative. I am afraid that I cannot add much more at the moment than what I have already written here. But I am now encouraged to reopen my research again, in case there is more information about him out there.
I will let you know if anything turns up.
Cheers Steve
