Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

I've been doing some further investigations. Johan Jacob Preiss (born 1854) was definitely the uncle of Johan Daniel Preiss, however he was not a Captain as I thought but rather a private. Later on, after the boer war, a Johan Jacob Preiss served as a Captain with the Mounted Rifles Branch, in the Christiana "B" Commando (1922)

Johan Daniel had a brother named Johan Jacob (born 1889) and a cousin, also named Johan Jacob (born 1885), who was the son of JJ mentioned in your post. So it could possibly be one of them that served as a Captain in 1922.

Attached are two photos of Johan Daniel Preiss, so that you can put a face to the medal and some further family details! If I find any further info, I will let you know.

Warm Regards,
Gareth

Gareth,
Thank you very much for posting the photos of JD and his brothers to this thread, it all helps to perpetuate the memory of him for posterity!
As he was known to family and friends as 'Baas' he must have been a well respected pillar of the Preiss family and wider community.
Do any of his diaries or letters from the period survive?
Regards, Steve

Hi Steve,

I unfortunately do not have any letters or diaries. I have the only military service records that exist for him, his military Attestation file and GSWA card. Just 6 pages that I obtained today! If you would like them, then please give me your email address and I will happily send them to you. If I find anything else, I will let you know.

Warm Regards,
Gareth Preiss
