I already have a group to Gale (featured on the Forum somewhere), and there was thus no reason for me to buy another to the same ship! What swayed me was the photo of the man - John William Colyer - which appeared on Ancestry. Once I knew what he looked like, I had to have the medal...

He is shown in Fevyer and Wilson as "357.381" and for period 11 Oct., 1899 - 8 March, 1901. I understand the "DOM" indicates an officer's servant. 162 no clasp medals to HMS Partridge; of which twelve were returned. "Afloat and Ashore" by Singlehurst has quite a good write up on the first commission activities of this 3rd class gunboat - including an instance where Partridge used her 4" gun to drive off a Boer raiding party at Hoetjes Bay.
