The Uitenhage Volunteer Rifles had an initial strength of 135 in 1899, and increased to 576 during the war.

Myer,

His medal was issued off the roll to the Uitenhage Town Guard. Is it named to the Uitenhage VR?

The TG roll has 14 CSM J G Nicholls. His no clasp medal is verified on WO100/286p69.

He does not appear to have served in any other unit.

Nicholls is a popular surname in South Africa. There are many potential matches in the marriage and death records from South Africa but a trawl through the FamilySearch site may be fruitful.

Charles,

Yes, you can post pictures as attachments to your posts. They need to less than or equal to 2,000 pixels in either dimension. Jpgs of 100-200k work well.

Once the image is/are created, click Attachment, then Add Files ..., attach the files. Lastly, in the text, choose where you want the image to appear by placing your cursor there and then click on the Insert button below the image.

You will see a code, eg placed in the text. Once the post is Submitted, the picture will replace the code. placed in the text. Once the post is Submitted, the picture will replace the code.[Attachment ... ] placed in the text.

Once the post is Submitted, the picture will replace the code.
