The collection is experiencing a growth spurt at the present moment , and I had quite forgotten about this recent acquisition. Gould's antecedents were shrouded in mystery until a chance glance at a newspaper report I'd found, revealed a Swaziland connection.

Mr Gould was quite a luminary in Swazi circles and seems to have had the ear of the King. He was certainly involved in the land question relating to the treaty the Boers had with the Swazis in the late 1800's.

He served in the ABW as a Trooper with Thorneycroft's M.I. before being commissioned into the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles as a Captain. More research is needed in what is likely to be an interesting character.

RobM down in nature's garden has come to light with this sterling extract. Meurig Jones should recognise it in a flash, as it is his father's work.
