This medal (QSA with clasps Paardeberg, Driefontein and Relief of Kimberley) to 3343 S.S.M. A. Brown, Roberts' Horse is on its way to me. Any assistance with casualty roll entry and circumstances around the actions he was Wounded in would be appreciated. The blurb from the dealer below:

S.S. Major A. H. Brown was wounded at Winburg on 21 May 1900 and died of his wounds at Heilbron on 1 June 1900. The regiment saw much action at Savannah Post where Q battery had to leave two guns which were taken out by hand. S.S. Major Brown was quite possibly involved in this action.

Sold with medal roll extract which shows that he was on attachment from the 18th Hussars.

Regards

Rory

Your man is not listed as a casualty under Roberts' Horse; SAFF lists him under 18H and the sole entry for that particular unit in the particular section. According to 18H's Regimental history, during April and May 1900 they were reforming after Natal and were sending patrols in the direction of Sunday's River to watch if the Boer forces were coming down from their position on the Biggarsberg. I could not find a direct reference to him.
He could well have been at Sannah's Post. Most probably was.

IL.

Many thanks gentlemen. What a wonderful hobby we have! Thanks to the mention of his uncle, George Martin, in the columns of the Effects Register, I was able to pinpoint my man in both the 1881 and 1891 census.

Poor blighter was born on the wrong side of the blanket. Something frowned upon back then but more acceptable now. More to follow once I get down to writing his story.
