Anyone ever seen a Kimberley Star with a sunken shield? I do not think I have. When did this become a rare variant?

This looks odd, the Kimberley Star consists of 3 parts, the Star, the coat of arms insert and the ring. Because of this all 3 have their own hallmark. Considering the Stars were made by the same manufacturer as evidenced by the makers mark, I find it hard to believe that there would be different dies and thus varieties.
This could be a one piece die struck copy, despite having hallmarks etc.

Ryan,

I have seen a few sunken shield Stars over the years. The level of detail on this Star is a lot lower than would be expected.

I would support Jon's suggestion that this is a copy.

The suspender is also very rough. Here is the Star for sale and below, for comparison, another A hallmark Star

A few replica copy stars available if you Google internet, this is just one example, at least they have added a C for copy, but others indicate the "sunken shield" variety.

I was offered one of these a few years ago and the seller was very disappointed when I told him that it was a copy as he had paid a large price for it...... The D of K medal that he had with it was authentic though......
