QSA (2) Cape Colony, South Africa 1901 (Tpr. S. R. Foxcroft. Gorringe’s F.C.) suspension claw possibly re-affixed.

Noonan's state 'date clasp a tailor’s copy' but from the picture it looks OK to me.

CC on Wo100/248p23. SA01 on WO100/248p96.

Also served in the Uitenhage DMT.

A popular surname in GFC.

An example of upside down naming:

Described as:

QSA (2) CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, impressed named TPR. W. KEHOE. GORRINGES F.C. with miniature in fitted case. Comes with copies of medal rolls and discharge extracts. William Kehoe served with the 2nd Brabant’s Horse from 27/2/1900 – 16/7/1900, Prince of Wales Light Horse (service # 27682) discharging 12/6/1901. He also appears on the Gorringe’s Flying Column roll with note Acting Sergeant with the Cape Colonial Forces.

TROOPER JOSEPH JAMES JACKSON: GORRINGE'S FLYING COLUMN

Accompanying his QSA was a photocopy of his attestation document which gives the researcher the following information:

Joseph James Jackson attested to Gorringe's Flying Column at Middelburg, Cape Colony on the 25th May 1901 and was posted to "G" Squadron.
Interesting to note that no regimental number was provided.

He was 19 years old at attestation and a Clerk by profession.
The address of his next of kin was 6 Kendle Street, Port Elizabeth. This is a little confusing when he states that he was living with his sister Mrs. J. Hall at Parliament Street, Port Elizabeth.

Part of the induction process into this irregular mounted regiment was confirmation that he possessed the requisite skills to become a mounted infantryman. He declared an ability to ride, shoot and speak Dutch. But had no previous military service under his belt and did not possess a horse, saddle or bridle. He was prepared to serve in any District within the colony.

The Nominal Roll tells us that he was discharged from Gorringe's Flying Column on 6th October 1901.

My own studies can find no service with other units after his discharge.

Queen's South Africa medal awarded to Trooper Joseph James Jackson bearing clasps for Cape Colony and South Africa 1901 (WO100/248).

Impressed naming, please note the absence of the regimental number

Impressed style for Gorringe's Flying Column to his QSA

I kind of regretted selling my previous example of a QSA to Trooper G. G. Buttner a little while ago (but I know it is in good hands with Dave F), but this acquisition squares everything up!

Steve,

A well-documented medal and nice to have the GFC back in your collection.
