Whilst half-heartedly attempting some "spring" cleaning this weekend, I found a QSA languishing in the bottom of a vase (!) - I have no recollection of purchasing this medal but I assume it was from eBay in the most early and unfocused period of my collecting. The medal is to 16941 Gunner C Stone, 10th MB, RGA and has a single clasp for Natal. This is confirmed on the medal roll, also confirming that he died 27th March 1900. The entry for this man on the www.angloboerwar.com/name-search says he died at Waterval POW Camp, but there is also an entry that says "Missing - died Pretoria at Nicholson's Nek. 30 Oct 1899. Source: Natal Field Force Casualty Roll, page 29 line 28". I am assuming that he didn't die twice, but would it be likely that he was taken prisoner at Nicholson's Nek? And if so, how might I verify this? Anyway, I was very pleased to find this medal again, and look forward to learning some more about the recipient.

I would read the NFF entry as "Missing at Nicholson's Nek 30/10.99 and Died at Pretoria" - with the medal roll entry confirming his death on 27th March, 1900. The entry for him in the Palmer Casualty roll simply says "Died of Disease, Waterval, 27/3/00". I would proceed with your research on the basis outlined in NFF and Palmer and hopefully his personal papers (or some other trace) might have survived.
Regards
IL.

If memory serves me correctly, the CO of the column surrendered the column, something not described in the "Find a Grave" Praecipe). Some of 10 MB were far removed from the main body and as such, felt disinclined to follow the order to surrender. They made it back to Ladysmith and differentiated by the DoL clasp. The example in my collection is a 4 clasp for (DoL, OFS, LN, Belfast). Having not done any research on this group to date I am assuming this was the standard of clasps to those that did not go into the bag at Nicholson's Nek.
