I originally posted this on the DoK page but thought it worthy of creating a separate post for it. Below was my initial posting:

I have acquired the DoK below - to 71 Pte. C. Halverson, K.T.G. - with verified clasps to DoK and OFS. This chap is a bit confusing... the KLH nominal roll has him attesting on 17 October 1899, followed by his dismissal from that unit on 18 December 1899. The left-hand page of the nominal roll confirms PRIOR service with the KTG - although it says (in brackets) what looks like D.F.H. (Diamond Fields Horse)?

So here's the thing - if his last known service ended with dismissal on 18/12/99 with the KH (KLH); then when would he have been likely to start with the KTG? And, even more puzzling, when did he earn the OFS clasp (which is verified on the roll?

All pointers/input greatly appreciated in advance.

Having received the medal I was pleased to receive a call from an expert in all matters relating to the Kimberley Siege, Richard Bellas from Gordon's Bay - what Richard doesn't know about medals to both the Defence and Relief is not worth knowing. Anyhow, I digress.... Richard pointed out to me that he has never before seen a NUMBERED QSA to the K.T.G. and yet here is Halverson, correctly named in every respect. The no. 71 was his whilst serving in the Kimberley Light Horse.

An anomaly perhaps? Does anyone have similar in their collections?

Rory

Hello Rory

An interesting anomaly. Have you seen WO100-383? This is a list of members of Kitchener's Horse who claimed a QSA.

Halvorsen is listed, not sure why as he didn't serve in Kitchener's Horse. However the other medal rolls state his QSA and two clasps was issued off 68/SA/9455 in 1905 . The entry in WO100-383 references this and critically gives him the regimental number '71'.

It is a shame that 68/SA/9455 is not available to us. But, as a late issue I suspect that 68/SA/9455 instructs a QSA to be made up to #71 Kimberley Town Guard. The clerk preparing the instruction was not aware of the anomaly before him.
