My grandfather was F.H. Howe who joined the Terrible on 5/9/98 as a Boy 1st class, becoming an O/S on 15/9/98. On the Medal Roll detailing his award of the QSA Medal, it says 20.22 in the Clasp section. Any idea what that means? Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum, Geoff.

Those two numbers represent his QSA clasps, Relief of Ladysmith and Tugela Heights.

Kind regards
David

Seaman Howe was a part of the Durban Defence Force and Relief of Ladysmith Contingent. The book "The Commission of HMS Terrible" shows Seaman Howe as being a member of the crew of Lt. Hunt's 4.7 inch gun.
It is rather unusual to be able to identify RN gun crew members. There are references to the activities of Terrible's guns in many accounts and histories of the Boer War. There is a fair bit of good reading for you to do!
Regards
IL.
