Yesterday's pick up at the C&T auction is going to prove interesting to research. For a start, John Dominic O'Brien doesn't appear in the Biggins book on the Siege of Kimberley. Being S.A.C., this would bring their tally to 10 men and 2 officers.

He has no fewer than 6 rolls in which he appears, serving with the Beaconsfield TG, Kimberley TG, KLH, KH and S.A.C. to which unit his QSA is named.

Regards

Rory

Rory,

That will be interesting to research.

The KTG roll lists two O'Brien who served in the SAC. John Avionsmith and another man with initials J W on the KTG roll (p107) and my book p217 but what I didn't do was connect him to J D O'Brien on the SAC roll.

Best wishes
David

Spot on David - he is the "J.W." you mention - see attached where, under the remarks column, his S.A.C. number, E393, is noted.

Nice pick up Rory.

I have been wary of trusting the those notations of other units that are preceded by a question mark because it means the clerk is not sure. You need to cross check them, if you have lots of time, and having the medal in front of you helps too.

The JA O'Brien above (brother?) is pretty spectacular - he gets P,DoK,RoM,T,SA01 on a medal named to the SAC.

This medal has finally arrived from the auction house. I have added a Kimberley Star (from stock) to illustrate his full entitlement.

Only 12 medals with DoK named to the SAC.
