Veterinary Major Samuel Duff-Gillespie (1849-1940), of Dundalk, Ireland, was born on 8 February 1849 and served with the Royal Horse Artillery as Veterinary Surgeon 2nd Class (on probation) from 10 June 1874, seeing service in the Afghanistan Campaign of 1878-80. Present at the Battle of Charasia, he was later promoted to Veterinary Major 1st Class on 26 September 1884, later joining Army Veterinary Department (A.V.D.).

He also served during the Boer War in South Africa during the operations in Cape Colony and in the Orange Free State, eventually retiring from service on 3 February 1904.

After a long retirement he died during the Second World War on 19 February 1940 at the age of 91, at Malahide County, Dublin, Ireland.

QSA (4) Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 (Civ: Vet: Surg: J. H. Hulseberg, A.V.C.) officially impressed naming,

John Henry Hulseberg qualified in London on 15 December 1897. During the Boer War he saw service in South Africa for an unknown period of time as a Civilian Veterinary Surgeon attached to the Army Veterinary Department at Mooi River. After the war he returned to England. He succumbed to meningitis at the College Hospital, St Pancras, London, after many years of suffering, on 2 February 1914, aged 46. He was the eldest son of Lieutenant-Colonel J W Hulseberg, Army Medical Department.

British War and Victory Medals (Major F. S Probyn),

Frederick Stewart Probyn, most likely a nephew of Thomas Frederick Arms, was born at Norwich on 26 August 1876. He served during the Boer War as a civilian veterinary surgeon, one of about 100 of whom volunteered for service in South Africa with the Army Veterinary Department, with whom he served from April 1902-December 1907.

He served as a Major in the Army Veterinary Corps during the Great War in Mesopotamia and retired from the Army on 2 October 1920.

He died at Sidmouth in July 1956.
