From the DoM book:

Born c 1858 in Yorkshire, son of John Storey. The CGR roll states 'Was Station Master at Mafeking during the whole period of the siege and assisted the Military Authories in every way'. 'Samuel Hulley was found near the Goods Shed on the Railway premises at 9.30 on Thursday evening. McLean challenged him but got no answers so he and C. P. Thos. J. Webb took him to Acting Stationmaster, Mr Storey, who told the Court, 'that he could make nothing of him'.' (MM024, 2 December). An advertisement in MM088, 8 March, offers surplus soft goods to merchants in Mafeking. The notice was signed Jno H Storey, Acting Stationmaster. 'Mr J H Storey, Chief Goods Clerk, was placed in charge of this Department [Food Supplies], and carried out his duties in a most able and conscientious manner' (More report). The QSA roll mentions Cambridge, East London. As stationmaster of Cambridge, he won a prize for best kept station in 1911. He married Gertrude Beatrice Ashton in King William's Town, 9 November 1914. He was 56 at the time of his marriage and described as a widower and stationmaster. Retired September 1919. There is a death notice for John Storey (commonly known as John Horne Storey). He was a retired stationmaster and died 16 December 1928 in Frere Hospital, East London, aged 70.

His son, William Storey also served in Mafeking and his QSA is extant.

IL,

Colin Walker's entry is not correct as he identified only one man called Storey in Mafeking. His entry contains some details for William Storey and some for John Storey.

Best wishes
David
