I might have missed it, but I don't think anyone has started a thread pertaining to their best acquisition for the year. I know it's hard to decide sometimes but, what would you say (and provide a photo with a short write-up) was your TOP BUY for 2022? Please limit it one group or medal.

I'll start the ball rolling with mine - the DSO group to Lt. Col. O.C. Du Port - a class mate of Churchill's at Harrow in 1892 he was at Talana with the 67th battery, R.FA.; was WIA in Ladysmith during the siege. Was MID for the Boer War and x5 for WWI where he served with distinction in the RA. He was a Cabinet Minister in the early Rhodesian governments and passed away at sea in 1929.

Wow, that is a superb medal group to start this thread with.
My top buy for 2022.
I was very pleased with this purchase.
A family group to the South African Light Horse & Roystons Horse.
A father and son combination.

870 Charles Ohlson S A L H was awarded a QSA 7 clasp medal and is believed to be one of several soldiers who died on active service with Roystons Horse during the Natal 1906 campaign. Unable to confirm if he was ever issued his Natal 1906 medal whilst with Roystons Horse.

His son 22874 G A Ohlsen who served with his father in S A L H, Roystons Horse and later with the South African Infantry during WW1. QSA, Natal & WW1 pair.

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Very nice Dave - and one of my favourite collecting themes - that of the QSA/1906 Bambatha combination.

I don't see any death notices in the SA Archives for a Charles Ohlson for 1906 as a casualty. The only Charles Ohlsen, Trooper, Royston's Horse, died of Pneumonia in Grey's Hospital, Pietermaritzburg in July 1906.

I have one of the KIA's to the Bambatha Rebellion - that to Lance Sergeant JCG Harrison, Natal Police, Killed in Action at Mpanza.

Regards

Rory

Mine was the reunite for Sister Elizabeth Gray. I had her QSA & KSA, and through this site was offered her BWM and TFWM along with her TFNS badge, a sewing medal and numerous original documents regarding her service in WWI. Still missing is her Victory Medal (please contact if you know its location). A rare and beautiful group to a beautiful woman and nurse. There were 587 KSAs, and only 227 TFWMs awarded to nurses.

A beautiful group to a beautiful woman - you have done well!

I, and others, will keep our eyes peeled for the elusive Victory Medal.

Best wishes

Rory
