A recent purchase

1419 Pte.W.Daley Kings Royal Rifle Corps 2nd Battalion and also $th Battalion.
Pte.Daley was awarded the following clasps for his QSA
Defence of Ladysmith,Orange Free State,South Africa 1901 & 1902 (The 1901 not with the medal)
Sadly unable to find any service papers.

Thank you for looking

Paul

Hi Paul

I have a liking for KRRC Boer War medals, so I was interested to your latest purchase. It has a very unusual clasp combination. Also, if he was entitled to the 'SA 1901' clasp, it is very odd that it was omitted from the mounting. There must be an interesting story about this man and his medal and it is a great pity that his service papers are missing.

My last KRRC purchase is also without service papers, which has been a big disappointment. I have asked my younger son, who lives in England, to visit The Rifles Museum in Winchester in the hope that there might be some relevant information there, but I suspect this is a vain hope.

Regards
Brett

Thank you for your reply and comments.
Yes it is always a dissapointment when service papers are unavailable, puts a dead end to further research.
I agree its seems strange the 1901 missing and the 1902 with the medal, but I guess sometimes that is the mystery of the hobby.
I have checked the medal rolls thoroughly and the entitlements are correct, this is my first D.O.L. so I was eager to add it to my collection.
Hope you have some luck with your KRRC

Regards
Paul

Hello Paul,
I very much like your Defence of Ladysmith, the KRRC took a very prominent part in the fight for the town and I can understand why you wanted it.
I don't have much to the KRRC, the attached was one of the first QSA's that I bought many years ago now, this one is 7083 Pte John Randall, who was invalided back on 20th august 1900 having served over eleven years.
Good luck with your collecting
Frank

Hi Paul,
Just a quick message to you! have you ever come across the QSM for
Gunner John Charles Maddock (5544) of "J" Battery RHA,he was in South Africa from the end of Jan 1900 till July when he was Invalided back home, and did not go back.
I'm trying to find out what happened to his Medal? as I'm doing an article on him and I would like photos for the article!

Thank You
From
Fred
