He served with the Natal Royal Rifles from 29 January 1900 to 31 May 1902.

Described as: A. W. Rawlinson of the Natal Royal Rifles is confirmed on the medal roll. He subsequently served with the Natal Composite Volunteer Regiment (Trooper No. 224 ), and was apparently one of just eight men from the regiment to do so. He appears to have served in the Great War as a Military Magistrate between 15 November, 1916, and 6 November, 1917, apparently with entitlement only to a Great War BWM.
