Yorkshire Tribute medal (type 2) with 3rd Company reverse for South Africa 1901-1902

The recipient is recorded on the medal roll as a member of the staff of the 3rd Imperial Yeomanry, but on the Nominal Roll of NCOs and men 9th Squadron (Yorkshire Hussars) in Lt. Col. R.L. Birkin's DSO book, History of the 3rd Regiment Imperial Yeomanry 28-1-00 to 6-8-02, 26757 Trooper Atkinson, W. Joined regt. 07/05/1901 (2nd Contingent). Promoted Lance-Corporal 03/04/1902; returned with regiment 06/08//1902. Yet, the QSA Medal Rolls state, Atkinson William Brown 26757 Corporal No known Company. Served in 3rd Btn IY Staff. Atkinson was in the second contingent of the 9th Coy., Yorkshire Hussars.

Herbert Burton was born in Bradford, Yorks in 1896. Before joining the Imperial Yeomanry, he was a wardroom man. He joined the Yorkshire Dragoons in Doncaster on 29/01/1901. He was 5’7” tall and weighed 104 lbs. He had a fresh complexion with light brown hair and brown eyes. He was C of E. He was posted to the 66th Coy., IY as a private on 29 January 1901; although a note on his service papers stated that he “wished to join the 9th Coy”, (Yorkshire Hussars). He landed in Gosport on 11/11/1901 after having served 259 days from 25/2/1901 to 10/11/1901. He was discharged on 13/11/1901, and paid his war gratuity as a private on 30/11/1901. He served a total of 289 days in the Imperial Yeomanry from 29/1/1901 until 13/11/1901. According to his service papers, he was awarded a QSA with CC, OFS, TR, SA01 and SA02. It’s odd as he did not serve in 1902, so he wouldn’t have been entitled to the SA02 clasp, and indeed there is not one on his medal.

His father was George Christopher Burton of 980 Leeds Rd., Bradford. He was a tailor and married to Elizabeth Burton. They had six children, Charles, Rosina, Thomas, Henry, Herbert and Annie. In the 1891 census, Herbert, who was 14, was working as an office boy. In 1911, Herbert who was 34, was living with his family again and working as a warehouseman for a “stuff Merchant”. His three sisters were living with his parents too. They lived at 266 Cemetery Rd, Bradford. The house still exists.

This portrait shows 32257 Trooper George Henry Booth, 109th (Yorkshire Hussars) Company, 3rd Bn. Imperial Yeomanry, wearing both the Doncaster and Yorkshire tribute medals, together with his 5-clasp QSA (Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902).
He served in South Africa from 23rd March 1901 to 23 August 1902.

The portrait was purchased with Booth's Doncaster tribute medal. Sadly this has become separated from his Yorkshire medal and QSA.

Reports in the press at the time suggest that the Yorkshire medal was issued without a ribbon: "I would like to know through the Yorkshire Evening Post if we can wear the Yorkshire County Medal along with the others we got for the war, and also if there could not be some kind of ribbon worn with it" (Yorkshire Evening Post, 30/03/1904).

The photograph of Trooper Booth shows a very pale ribbon without stripes, which I assume was yellow (the same as the IY LS & GC ribbon). The contemporary date of Booth's portrait suggests that he considered this the "correct" colour at the time. However, the blue & yellow Cape of Good Hope GS ribbon is often seen with the medal today. Perhaps, without an officially sanctioned ribbon, individuals wore which ever colour they preferred.

Yes, the YTs come with both the Yellow IYLSGC ribbon and the Cape of Good Hope GS Ribbon. I had a cased YT that had an original IYLSGC ribbon neatly folded in it; the medal had never been worn and so I have always assumed that it was the ribbon that was most often worn. Later I will post a list of 27 groups I used to have which all included the YT.

As promised, here is a list of known YTs in Yorks Hrs. pairs and groups that I once had. Hopefully they are still together and this research will help the current owners. I have not listed the single QSAs or YTs I had that were missing their partners. Because it was such a specific and narrow niche of collecting, I managed to unite several QSAs with their YTs.

When he enlisted at Doncaster on 1.1.1900, he was 5' 11.5" and weighed 12.5 St. He had a dark brown complexion with black hair and dark brown eyes. He was C of E. He worked at a glass bottle manufacturer and lived at 8 Tavistock Place, London W.C. He went to S. Africa on 28.1.1900 and served there until 23.4.1901. He was at Hielbron, Lindley and Renoster. He discharged at his own request on 24.5.1901 after 1 year and 144 days service.

eyes and hair. He enlisted at 26 years and 11 months old. He returned to the UK on the troopship Shorncliffe for debility. He was married and lived at 6 Elsworth St., Doncaster.

Edward Lycett Wheelwright joined the Yorkshire Hussars on 8.1.1900 in Sheffield.
He was 25 and a half years old and had been born in Halifax. He as a farmer by trade.
He was 5’9” and had brown hair and blue eyes. He had a scar on his left wrist and on
his right thigh. He served in the Boer War and was severely wounded (shot in
left leg) on 6.1.1901 at Bailybrith, along with Trooper Smith. He was discharged at
Shorncliffe on 11/1/1901 as medically unfit for further served ater serving 1 year and
82 days abroad. According to his daughter, he was asked by Rob Ellis to re-enlist in
WWI, but he would only join and an officer. He joined the KOYLI as a Lt. and was
promoted to Capt. In the 1st Bn. KOYLI on 30.1.1915. He fought in the Macedonia
and was MID twice by Gen. Sir G.F. Milne; 25.10.1917 and 1.11.1918. The CO
abandoned a group of stranded men to which Wheelwright objected. He and a
volunteer rescued the men and he was awarded the OBE (LG 31.12.1918) while
attached to the 1st Bn. KOYLI in Salonika. He contracted Malaria and was discharged
on 9.11.1918 as unfit for duty. He retained his rank. There is also a 3rd Imp. Yeo.
Slouch hat insignia, a CDV, and a photo of Wheelwright. There are numerous
KOYLI insignia and two sweetheart pins. There are also two original MID
certificates and the original Yorkshire Hussar discharge certificate dated 11.6.1907.

previously served in the Yorkshire Hussars, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry,
aged 30 years. He served in South Africa from 28.1.1900 until 21.7.1900 and was
discharged at his own request on 19.11.1900. He attested again on 27.1.1901 and
served in South Africa from 9.2.1901 until 13.2.1902, being discharged as
medical unfit on 21.4.1902. Research indicates that only 20 men from the 3rd Bn. Imp.
Yeomanry gained the K.S.A. medal.

the son of Isaac Henry Chantry, the Station Master at Market Rasen, Lincoln. He was invalided on
17.12.1902. After the war his address was St. Andrews, London. He was an electrician. On
26.10.1904 or 09, when he was 21, he was married to Norah Ratcliffe (21) coremaker from Market
Rasen by Vicar David M. Mellvill, COE. She was the daughter of Charles Ratcliffe a laborer. He
moved to Chicago, USA and later won $300. for a prize-winning article in Collier's Magazine
21.09.1921. He was a salesman and sold electrical light plants making over 20K between 01.03.1921
And 31.08.1921. He was born in Balby, Doncaster and was an apprentice at the Steel Pealo Tozer in
Rotheram for 19 months. He then became an electrician. He enlisted at 20 years, and one month.
He enlisted on 12.02.1901 in Doncaster when he was 5'8 and ¾” tall, 8 st. and 5 lbs. with blue eyes
and brown hair. He was discharged as medically unfit on 15.01.1902. With two photos and a
pamphlet he wrote.

medically unfit at Shorncliffe. He lived at his uncle Frederick's house at 48 Morrison St.
Lincoln.

Frederick Randall was born at Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and was a groom aged 23 when
in enlisted at Chippenham on 25 Jan. 1901. He was the son of William Randall of 18
Stallard St., Trowbridge. He was a Wesleyan. He was 5’6.5” tall and 141 lbs. He had
light brown hair and gray eyes. He originally joined the 1st Bn. Imp. Yeo. He joined
the regt. On 07.05.1901 and was promoted to Cpl. On 03.04.1902. According to
Birkin’s, he was attached to HQ, 8th Bn. in June 1901. He returned with the regt. On
06.08.1902 having served in S. Africa from 25.03.1901 - 27.08.1902. (WO

Joseph Hume Burn a farmer of Hornsea nr. Hull. Conduct: very good. Discharged
30.8.1902 at Aldershot. Aprox. 115 DCM's to Imp. Yeo, 2,090 for S. African War.

7.10.1918. 24616 total DCMs for WWI. " After the officers of his company had been
put out of action, CSM Hopper took charge of the action until ordered to retire. He
reorganized his company in their new position, & by his example encouraged his men
to hold on under heavy fire." The 25th Bn. Fusiliers (Frontiersmen) were formed from
mostly legion members & amongst its men were game hunters, explorers & scouts. It
was led by Col Driscoll who led Driscoll’s Scouts in the Boer War. Lt. Dartnell, one
of the Btn. officers was awarded the VC for this campaign. Harry H. Hopper first
arrived in Africa on 4.3.1915.
