New collector's question regarding QSA/KSA vs QSA 1 year 6 months ago #91961

Started adding QSA/KSA and QSA's to my collection recently and I have a couple questions.

I understand that the KSA was not awarded on it's own and most oftn had the '01 and '02 clasps, very only rarely had no clasps or just 1 clasp.

I have figured out (I think) that if the QSA has either or both the '01 and '02 clasp, that would indicate the recipient would not have received the KSA....Is this a correct assumption?

Since the ABO started in 1899 I can see where a QSA with no date clasp would not necessarily be an indicator that they would have been entitled to the KSA.

Is there any sort of clue when looking at individual QSA's with no date clasp that the recipient was or was not entitled to the KSA as well, or do you need to have access to roles?

I have my eyes on a couple single QSA's, and while it won't stop me from buying them, it will drive me even more bonkers than I already am if/when I find out they were entitled to the KSA as well and it is missing.

As always. Thanks for the help.

I have seen examples where a QSA has both date clasps in addition to others and basic research indicated the award of a KSA. Always check the roll if in doubt. Really, always check the roll - you never know what you will find. Same caution also applies when a QSA has a single date clasp as some clasps were awarded later and sometimes much later. The QSA/KSA medal rolls at the UK NA are accessible on this site.

Linneyl thanks much for the reply. Sorry, more questions.....you said, "...The QSA/KSA medal rolls at the UK NA are accessible on this site." Do you mean I can actually find the medal rolls on the ABW website, or do I need to go to the NA? When I searched the ABW page for KSA Roll, I found a page entitled KSA medal roll index which says: "...National Archives in the WO100 range. For example, to verify a KSA to the 20th Hussars would mean you accessed roll WO100/305......" Then I went to the NA and searched WO100/239 & 339 (for the medals I am interested in purchasing) and it said download the PDF for free...so I signed up and ordered the PDF's, got them but haven't had a chance to open them and look thru them. I'm guessing I plow thru these looking for the names and if I don't see the soldiers' names in the roll I assume they weren't entitled to the KSA, therefore the solo QSA is appropriately solo as opposed to separated from its sibling?????

Thanks!!!!!
