From time to time Lady Luck shines her ethereal countenance in my direction. This was the case yesterday when I was trawling some of the dealer sites for medals - I happened upon one to 3568 Tpr. C.E.H. Sutherland of Kitchener's Horse - an innocuous enough medal but, once I'd done a bit of digging, one which started to immediately yield dividends!

Charles Edward Hartley Sutherland was one of those rarest of beasts - a Jameson Raider! He served with the Artillery in the Raid and was a Corporal in the M.R.F. in the 1896 troubles in Matabeleland. He then went on to serve in Kitchener's Horse/ Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles before transferring out , on promotion to Lieutenant, with the Railway Police (see here www.angloboerwar.com/forum/11-research/3...f-the-railway-police )

Vigilance is everything in this hobby.

Very nice, Rory. I look forward to reading Sutherland's story, when it's ready.

Members of the DEOVR were involved (in their personal capacities, not officially) in both the Raid and the 1896 Matabeleland campaign. Some of the raiders joined the DEOVR after the Raid.

I suspect the hand of Rhodes's crony Frank Johnson, who was involved in organising the Raid, and in recruiting for Matabeleland. He was an officer in the DEOVR at the time, in command of the mounted company. The company was transferred (or seconded) to Kitchener's Horse in January 1900.

Arthur

Rory,
Lady Luck has certainly shone on you there.
But the harder you work the luckier you get is also a major element of our hobby.
Great find!
Cheers Steve

Interesting
He was repatriated to the UK with the bulk of the Raiders on the Harlech Castle. He returned to South Africa leaving on 28 March 1896 - travelling again as it happened on the Harlech Castle. All you have to do now is find his BSACM!

Lucky Beast!

Gary Player used to say "The longer I practice, the luckier I get!"

Sometimes one reaps dividends and a deserved special one for you.

A Duke nogal !

The moment I saw he was a Duke my thoughts wandered in your direction.

He's an interesting fellow who died at sea in 1913.
