Gatland is a very interesting chap. Came over from New Zealand sometime between 1897 and 1899,has a rugby fob for Hauraki FC dated 1897. Enlists with the above unit, gets a five bar QSA, and apparently returns to Queensland 03-05-1901. He turns up in Natal 1906 and gets the Natal with bar to the Transvaal Mounted Rifles, of which according to Clives wonderfull book, there were only three known at the time of publication. Very rare pair to an Aussie/NZ er. He would have been thirty two ish in 1906,dont know anything else about him, could have been still playing rugby. GAB

Sorry Clive, but I have notyet mastered the art of down loading phtographs. Gatland seems to have settled in South Africa as quite a few did after the war,he died there in 1954. GAB

He can also be found on accessible Family Trees on Ancestry which have the same photo attached to his profile.

The mention of Rugby football makes me wonder if he is related to Warren Gatland.

Having just had a photo reduced, I hope I have managed to attach a picture of the memorial plaque to Lionel Chichester which is in Bishop’s Tawton . Church.
The Chichesters were a very prominent North Devon land owning family until the mid 1900s with Miss Chichester
living at Arlington Court.
My grandfather RM Stone who served in 1906 in the Natal Rebellion is buried in the cemetery at Bishops Tawton
