I've read of there being both official renaming of medals, and obviously unofficial renaming. But what's the difference? Are there tells as to when a medal has been officially changed?

While it would be useful to know this generally, I ask specifically because of this QSA in my ownership. It's an obvious rename (see the "H" before "71st") but I know no more. Either way I'm trying to look beneath the lettering to see what it previously said!

A small bump as this thread was quickly buried in an avalanche of medals!

Hi P-C,

I would like to start by saying that I’m no expert but I do spend a lot of time looking at medals and so here is my 5c worth:

The medal has been officially named, the first part looks spot on. The second part has been officially altered; I suspect the “H” could be his own surname; I don’t know if the medal was placed in the incorrect orientation when first impressed.

I don’t suspect foul play.

Often when the recipient is entitled to subsequent medals then you can see the rubbing or impact marks; particularly from the KSA. I sometimes try to line up the medals and then see where they impact each other. Maybe just maybe you are seeing that as well.

Bottom line is that eventhough the H is clearly evident it looks legit to me.

Once again though…..just my opinion.
Speak my name so that I may live again

Hi,

Not the answer I was expecting but not one that would displease me either! I can't find any evidence of renaming around the regimental number or name, it seems to start at the unit. I hadn't planned to reunite this medal with its clasps, being as I didn't believe it to be the correct name, but that might change now.
