Good Morning David,

It would be greatly appreciated if you could assist me with the documents for the following 2 Commander in Chiefs Bodyguards:

1. 22405 TRP: W. BARRETT; Killed in action 3rd Jan 1901; the c in c medal roll lists his previous service with the Bechuanaland Rifles Volunteers and his name is listed on their roll but no other information is available. From his personal effects I know he was born in Birmingham, worked as a miner and that his NoK was his brother Edward.
Entitled to OFS, CC and SA 1901 clasps.

2. 25237 TRP: A.E. JONES; entitled to clasps South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902, Transvaal, Orange Free State, and Cape Colony clasps.

I have been able to ascertain that he previously served with the Imperial Yeomanry Scouts, # 6068, and was taken POW when De Wet attacked Roodewal Station on the 7th June 1900.

Any other information would be appreciated; thanks.

Good morning Sturgy,

Congratulations on finding a QSA to a man of the Bodyguard killed in action in the ambush at Reitz. An example of a casualty from this action has long eluded me!

Further to Barrett, as he was born in Birmingham, I have taken a look at the Roll of Honour on the South Africa memorial in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham. Unfortunately, he is not listed thereon. Not on the Dudley memorial either (about 10 miles from Birmingham).

Many thanks for posting these two QSAs and good luck with further research.

Cheers Steve
