Hello,

I would like to say that I am new at collecting British medals and I am just cutting my teeth on this one. My first acquisition is this QSA Medal Named to a Trp C. Stutfield (# 30401), 70th Company (sharpshooters) 18th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. I have found Trp Stutfield listed on several websites but I have been unable to discover his first name, other then the first initial of ā€œCā€, is there a way to find out? I also have a question concerning the clasps. Since he has the South Africa 1901 & 1902 clasps on the ribbon is it safe to assume that he was with the second contingent of Imperial Yeomanry?

Thanks,
John

Hello John,
I checked their medal rolls in WO100/127 pages 221 and 228, this latter is their supplementary roll, in respect of the two date clasps, hoping to see his forename as there are many that are entered with the full name.
I'm afraid your man's forename is one of the few not written in that way, with only a letter C being shown, his attestation paper should give his forename, so a check in WO128 at the TNA Kew may be the way to go.
Regards Frank

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply and welcome. Concerning the cap badge (avatar) it belonged to my great grandfather.

Best,
John

Frank,

Thanks for your time and effort. I will check the reference you made in the in "WO128 at the TNA Kew" but if I may ask what is it? I'm new at collection British medals.

Best,
John

Good Morning John.....

First I do not know where you are located but by the cap badge in the avatar I would say somewhere here in Canada.....

WO128 is the file where the medal roll is kept for that unit in TNA which is The National Archives in England at a town/district called Kew.....

I have run into the same problem being here in Canada and have used the services of a professional researcher to look up the documents and make copies for me.....

May I suggest;
