Hi all

I was hoping someone can help me, i have just purchased a QSA with 3 clasps, CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, SOUTH AFRICA 1902. It was awarded to 8000 T Maddocks Rifle Brigade. Now my problem according to the medal roll on Ancestry he served with the 4th battalion rifle brigade and was entitled to the QSA, however in the clasps coloum there is a diagonal line through the page with the word hil or it might be nil? I find it hard to belive that all 20 men on the page were not entitled to clasps or did the 4th batalion not qualify for clasps, any help would be gratefull

Medal and all clasps verified on WO100/210 page 361, issued from their supplementary roll! :)
Welcome to this forum by the way!

Thanks for that, it has put my mind to rest, is there a way to go straight to that page rather than searching through the records, and thanks for the welcome :cheer:

Hi,
Yes, select the medal roll page, enter his details on the left and click on search, then look at all the results, remember the names are transcribed, so are subject to error, sometimes it is as well to just look at the whole roll to find the man you are looking for.
With the QSA, it is important to look at the naming and the rivets and if all is well there, then it is usually the case that the particular medal in question will be okay.
If the rivets are not official ones then you should also take a look at the clasps to ensure all is well.

Well I have always prefered to go down to Kew and look at the original bound volumes in WO100, I used to do that a lot in the early 1990's.
Now of course even the micro film readers are old hat at Kew and computers rule! :(
You can still view and handle the original volumes but they don't like it! :(
You would need a reader ticket and go through their security procedures.
