Manning served with the 3rd Dragoon Guards during the Boer War and arrived in SA during Jan/Feb 1901 and it would seem, only served in Natal.
The 3rd Dragoon Guards remained in SA until mid 1904
(this according to a write up by the South African Military Society- Vol 8 No 1-June 1989)
Manning’s enlistment date into the Natal Police as 3382 Trooper on the 11/06/1904 coincides with the departure date of the 3rd Dragoon Guards from SA.
As Manning’s Regimental number is in the 3 Thousands, his service record sheet has survived. It shows that he was promoted to 1st Class Trooper on the 11/06/1905 and was re –engaged on the 11/06/1907 and again on the 11/06/1910. It also shows that he was serving in the Gaol Depot.
