Brett,
WO100/251 is made up of more than one roll in the same volume for the 2nd Imperial Light Horse, because he is on that particular page, his rank is shown as Private, as are the others of that rank.
Had he been on the roll, before, page 76, his rank would be given as Trooper.
But, don't worry, WO127/10 confirms him as a Trooper, as does WO100/361 page 190, moreover, I am confident that any surviving paper in WO126/55-65, would indeed confirm, Trooper and not Private.
Regards Frank

Frank,

I will be interested to have a look at WO127 when I next visit the TNA.

That information on the variation in ranks was also intriguing. Do you think that later versions of the roll were less clear on the distinction to be made between Troopers and Privates?

Good morning David,
I just think that the person who came along and wrote up that portion of the roll, just entered them as Private and not Trooper, I have to say that I prefer the rank of Trooper, however, when you look a most of the regular cavalry, they too are Privates and not Troopers, despite being mounted.
Does not matter really, the rank on the medal, matches the rank on the roll from which it was issued.

Frank,

I, like you, prefer Trooper to Private and hadn't until the last few days noticed that the medals to the ILH varied in this naming style. I should look more closely!

With thanks
David
