572 3rd Grade Ward Servant
Vythee
Army Hospital Corps Madras Command

Queen’s South Africa Medal no Clasps 572 3rd Gd Ward-Servant Vythee S&TC

Present for the clasps Belfast, Talana, Defence of Ladysmith Laing's Nek

A India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Burma 1885-7, bronze issue was issued to 50 Ward Servt. Vythee, Mad. A.H.N. Corps.sold DNW

The numismatic importance of this medal is that no clasps were authorised for Ward Servants issued with the silver medal.

Rules for Adoption in the Future claims to War Medals

“Clasps may be granted to both classes when the clasp is awarded on a General Service Medal as distinctive of the operations as a whole, and not of any particular action. As, for instance, in the case of the Africa General Service Medal and the Indian Frontier Medal.”

No. 18 Field Hospital, initially at Dundee, was moved to Ladysmith and sited around Market Square

The Indian hospital corps did excellent service by following after the troops during the fight and bringing in the wounded on stretchers for surgical treatment, thus rendering the extreme pain which they were suffering to be of as short-lived duration as possible. www.angloboerwar.com/books/invasion/stott-talana_hill.htm

Thank you for showing another interesting medal to an Indian soldier. I will look forward to seeing it again after you have re-united it with its companion IGS54!

It must be very pleasing to be able to identify the clasps that could (and should) have been awarded with such no-clasp medals.

Regards
Brett

Unfortunately there is no way of telling if they are one and the same. Just a curiosity.

Very disappointing! I would accept they are one and the same man as an excuse to put two good medals together!
