Hi Frank and others

Vallentin's group was sold in the Lovell Sale (15 Nov 1978) for almost 3 times the lower estimate.

When the group came up again at the Spink 1999 Boer War Sale I was very keen to get it and fortunately I was successfull.

In 2004 I bought a folder of Heidelberg related items because it contained 9 examples of "purchase approvals" signed by Vallentin. (The larger one shown above has a second signature, that of Major Baron W G Bentinck DSO Rifle Brigade)

An absolutely fabulous group, Henk, and what a man too!

I was sat their, on that day, over thirteen years ago now and I dropped out, it was day two, I'd already spent a lot of money, I have always regretted doing so, you must have seen my reply to one of Mikes posts the other day!
Over three grand well spent!



But glad the District Commissioner has found a really good home!

Hello Paul,
Well, I can't have everything I want, but, I have always regretted not buying this group, in fact I do remember thinking for quite a few weeks after that sale that I had made a mistake, I could and should have gone higher!
The IGS is very nice in particular and appears being worn by the Major in the famous portrait!
