Latest aquisition purchased today.
4529 Private Thomas Slater Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Thomas was born in 1876 in the Parish of St.Peters Derby in Debyshire England.
He atttested on the 22th January 1894 in Sheffield at the age of 18
his description is listed as
Height 5feet 4inches
Weight 121 lbs and a chest measurement of 32 inches
His complexion is described as fresh with brown eyes and hair.
Religous donomination was Church of England.
The surgeon considered him fit for the Army and he was appointed him to the 2nd Batt. KOYLI
Early in his Army career he was imprisoned by C.O. but was returned to duty after 1 week.
In March of 1898 Thomas sailed of to the East Indies and was stationed there for 353 days before moving to Mauritius were he was stationed for 231 days.
He landed in South africa on 6th October 1899 were after 78 days he left again for Mauritius and was finally discharged medically unfit for active service on 31st May 01 after being stationed on Home service.
Thomas is on the Boer War casualty list as being wounded on the 25th November 1899 at Enslin.
Thomas passed his class of instruction for the Mounted Infantry in 1898 and for his service in South Africa he was awarded the QSA with the single clasp of Belmont.
He was also noted in the newspaper "The Bugle" as a casualty and "missing"

Paul,
A most pleasing medal, so this is his full entitlement, you do seem to be buying good honest medals and I would be very pleased with that if it were me.
A good example of the period badge too, I bet you have to take out a mortgage to buy one, quite scarce in its own right these days.
Money well spent I feel!

The badge is one of my favourites.

Good evening Paul,
That is the way I collected originally, got all the clasps first though, then concentrated on the battles and then on certin units, but, the medals were all around in reasonable quantities, so was not really a problem back then.
I would say just keep on going, honest text book medals as cheap as you can find them.
