I always took it for granted that all the soldiers who served in South Africa where all awarded the QSA and KSA but have noticed the one medal shows year clasps, battle clasps and state clasps all on one !!! Why where soldiers issued with one service medal while others where issued with two ? Would two medals have given you further street cred in those days ? did two medals and clasps tell others what this person experienced in the Boer campaign ? I have a 1906 company image of my great uncle in the Connaught's sporting his two medals while the majority sport one medal stationed in Poona, India. Always wondered why the difference. Always assumed medals where sold off or lost in a game of cards or sent home.

To get the KSA you needed to have 18 months service in before the 1st June 1902 and have actually been on active service in South Africa on the 1st of January 1902.
Whilst a common medal to the British Army, it is rather scarce to a Colonial.
