I have acquired a QSA with clasps TVL and Cape Colony to 325 Tpr J.P. JOHNSTON, Imp. Light Horse.

Johnston, or Johnson as he is sometimes referred to on the medal rolls, saw service with Prince Alfred Volunteer Guard in the early part of the war before transferring to the 2nd Imperial Light Horse off which roll his medal was issued.

Further investigation revealed (from the ILH nominal roll) that his names are James Percival Johnson and that he had also served as a Scout with the Field Intelligence Department. Despite the roll for the latter which I have managed to trace can any member advise me if there would be papers for this chap anywhere.

He also appears to have been eligible for the SA 1901 clasp.

Regards

Rory

Good evening Rory,
I've looked at this man and I think your best hope would be his Imperial Light Horse Attestation and perhaps a Discharge paper in WO126/55-65 at Kew, a very brief look at WO127/10, WO100/251 page 33, WO100/284 page 60 and WO100/301 page 105 gives us the facts.
Enlisted at Port Elizabeth 5th December 1900 into the 2nd Imperial Light Horse, attained the rank of Corporal and was discharged at Johannesburg on the 13th of June 1901, medal and Transvaal clasp from WO100/251 page 33, name given as Johnston.
Cape Colony clasp from WO100/284 page 60, which confirms his number in the PAVG as 450 and gives his name as Johnson, in the remarks column, "Released for Civil Duties" from memory, I think there is a nominal roll in WO127, but, I think this was for the PAGMI only, rather than the PAVG.
His South Africa 1901 clasp is shown in WO100/301 page 103, this is the FID supplementary roll and shows his other service, it also gives his rank as Scout.
He is not shown on their nominal roll, but, this is very incomplete and comes as no real surprise, moreover, to actually have a member of the FID, who is actually on their nominal roll is quite rare.
Regards Frank.

Frank,

Just for your info. My avatar is a group to Scout C. Rudolph who served in the Cape Police(CGHGS and QSA) and then in the FID (KSA). He is on the nominal roll.

Greetings Adrian,
Most men are not, so you are fortunate, but, it does not really matter, as both you and Rory have the entries for your scouts in WO100.
In your case you have three such entries, which also includes the FID supplementary roll as well as the KSA roll entry and even his entry in the Cape Police roll, WO100/240 page 230 clearly shows him as a Scout in the FID
Regards Frank
