Some time ago I posted that there was one particular medal in the Spink 1999 sale the significance of which I was not aware of at the time.

It was one of two raised dates QSAs and given Mike's interest in LSH, and having visted the new museum in the Cloth Hall in Ypres and the Menin Gate last weekend, I thought the following might be of interest.

What was in itself an exceptional QSA to a Trooper LSH becomes even more so when by chance I stumbled across the following entry in the School Register for King William's College on the Isle of Man:

"NASH, John Foster Paton, born April 22nd, 1866. Left Christmas, 1877. Son of T. Nash, Trafford's.

Served in Strathcona's Horse, Boer War. Farming in British Columbia. Capt. 5th Batt. 2nd Inf Brigade, 1st Canadian Division B.E.F. D.S.O., August 1915, C.B., 1916 (Despatches twice). Killed in Action, April 23rd 1916, near Ypres."

A brave man and distinguished soldier.

Thank You Justin.....

A number of the members of the Strathcona's went on to greater things in WW1....

A member of the Canadian Scouts also went on to greatness.....

Captain Hugh Trenchard became.....

Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Hugh Trenchard, 1st Viscount Trenchard, G.C.B., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O. Head and Founder of the Royal Air Force and later Commissioner of the Metropolitain Police.

Mike,

Indeed. One of the British Army officers brought in to be Adjutants of the SAMIF regiments after Kitchener became very concerned about their lack of discipline!

Good Morning Justin.....

Yes they may have had a lack of discipline, but I have read a report where that when the regiment was due to go home after their year of service, Kitchener asked if they would consider staying because they had done a good job.....

Also when asked to form the South African Constabulary, Baden-Powell specifically asked that Lt. Col. Sam Steele be made his Second-In-Command.....
