Service papers extant. From Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Served for 2 years and 120 days in South Africa from 21 September 1899.

QSA (5) Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith, Belfast, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (4881 Pte. D. Coyle, Manchester Regt)

M&E state Dennis Coyle of Renfrewshire, Scotland, was born c.1878 and served with the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment is confirmed for the first 3 clasps on the medal roll (date clasps currently unconfirmed).

First three clasps listed on WO100/198p19.

He served in South Africa for 3 years and 200 days from 23 August 1899. SA01 and SA02 clasps listed on his papers so KSA (2) expected.

MID in Sir G White's despatch.

M&E say 'additional entitlement to a 2 clasp K.S.A. (states he was invalided, which is not listed in Palmer).' I cannot see that on the KSA roll.

Together with privately made silver V.C.R. 'All That Was Left of Them' badge, lacking reverse pin, and four other related items of insignia.

M&E say E. R. H. Lewis of Stanger’s Troop, Natal Mounted Rifles (as stated on an old ticket) is confirmed on the medal roll, with additional entitlement to a 2 clasp K.S.A. He is believed to have served as one of General Sir George White’s Bodyguard during the Siege of Ladysmith, and later transferred to the Natal Volunteer Composite Regiment where he was promoted to Serjeant. He latterly served with the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles where he was commissioned as Lieutenant.

QSA (5) Cape Colony, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Transvaal (Lieut: F.O. Stiebel, Natal M.R.), engraved;

MID London Gazette: 29 July, 1902

M&E state that 'Captain F. O. Stiebel of the Natal Mounted Rifles is confirmed on the medal rolls. He additionally served with the Natal Composite Volunteer Regiment and was one of only 12 members of the Natal Mounted Rifles to receive the Cape Colony clasp. He was mentioned in Lord Kitchener’s dispatch of 23 June 1902 where he is recorded as having the rank of Captain.'

QSA (2) Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith (4 L.Corpl: W. Jago. Imp: Lt Horse), once lacquered.

Described as: Walter Jago of the 1st Battalion, Imperial Light Horse, is confirmed on the medal roll, and was severely wounded at Wagon Hill, Ladysmith, on 6 January 1900. He was invalided out of the service on 3 March 1900 and is confirmed in ‘The Boer War Casualty Roll’ by Palmer. Offered with copied attestation papers showing prior service with the Tower Hamlets Volunteer Engineers, and giving a correspondence address of 'T. S. Jago, H.H.M. Consul General, Tripoli, Barbary, N. Africa'.
