QSA (2) Talana, Defence of Ladysmith (4468 PTE G CUNNINGTON 1: LEIC R.)

Georg [sic] Cunnington, a Farm Labourer from Kings Cliffe, Stamford, Lincolnshire, attested for service in the Leicestershire Regiment at Leicester on 27th September 1895. He spent 7 years with the colours and 5 years in the Army Reserve, promoted Corporal on 3rd March 1902 he was discharged on 26th September 1911. He served in South Africa from 24th September 1897 until 16th December 1900.

He was invalided.

Bernard McKiernan was born in 1875 at Drumcree, Portadown, County Armagh and was a labourer by trade. He was serving in the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers upon his joining the Regular Army on 14 May 1895, whence he joined the 1st Battalion. He served overseas with his Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War. Taken prisoner at Nicholson's Nek, 30 October 1899. He was released in May 1907.

From the Talana book:

The time was now 09:00. While the men made their way to the wall the Boers were incessantly sniping at anything that moved near the wall or the approaches to it. It was here that Captain Pechell and Lieutenant Taylor were killed and Major Boultbee was wounded. Amery, commenting on the accuracy of the Boer fire. Amery said, “To show how concentrated or accurate was the fire of the Boer sharpshooters, no less than five out of six men of the Rifles were hit on passing a gap in the wall as the companies were being extended under its cover.” The wait was to last an agonising two hours.

Boultbee, Major Charles Archibald Townsend, King's Royal Rifle Corps, 1st Battalion | QSA (1) Tal | Dangerously wounded, upper thigh, Talana, 20 Oct 99. Also served with the 3rd Btn. He was born 27 Jul 1857 in Charlton, Kent. Joined from the Militia. 2nd Lieutenant 21 Jul 1877. Lieutenant 7 Apr 1880. Qualified as an instructor of signalling in 1880. Captain 21 Apr 1886. Major 16 Apr 1894. Served with the 4th KRRC 1 Nov 1880 to 31 Oct 1887. He served in India 14 Oct 1878 to 16 Oct 1885 and 17 Apr 1886 to 24 Oct 1888 | Ref: QSA: WO100/196p1

QSA (1) Talana (552 Pte F. Scott, K.R.R.C.) number officially corrected

F. Scott served with the 1st KRRC. He was wounded in action at Dundee on 20 October 1899. Invalided 23 March 1900.
