Browsing The Times, I came across this article from 1903 on presentations of medals to troops. What is interesting is that the article provides additional information on the reasons for the award of some DCMs.

As an example, Sgt W Kimberley, RSF is listed in the DCM book with details of the LG and AO dates only. The newspaper says he was awarded the DCM for bravery at Colenso.

Justin,

I was wondering where they sourced their information from. Any ideas?

I chose Sgt W Kimberley, probably because of the surname but I see there is a picture of him on the Australian Boer War site .

Also this anecdote:

Stephen Pinfield's father told me before he passed that Grandad Kimberley was captured in the battle for Kimberely but released due to his name being the same as the town and the arresting officer having the name Kimberley (translated) as well. This of course has never been verified by me but thought it an interesting story.

That would have been great!

Interestingly on the QSA roll his clasps are RoL, CC & Tr. No LN which most of regiment have.

He was wounded at Colenso so guess he was recuperating for a the rest of the Natal campaign?
