Hello All,

I picked up this rather interesting pair yesterday and thought I would share Cpl J.J. Smith with you.

I really like the engraving on the reverse of the Kimberley Star and as you will notice (just) it shows Kimberley "Buffs" The Buffs were a company made up entirely of members of the Kimberley Club, a wonderful establishment that I had the pleasure of staying at in 2019.

I have included a couple of photo's (poor quality as my camera skills are awful) of photo's etc in David's book " The Kimberley Siege and Account" which shows Cpl J.J Smith and one which clearly shows his Cpl stripes.

Now for the research..

Adrian,

I have gone back to the original photo to extract JJ. He is very slightly blurred in the picture.

Adrian,

Here is another picture of the Buffs.

I thought, possibly, JJS was at the back, by the tent, but I am not sure it is him now.

Hello David,

Thank you for the extra pics. I think you are right thats not him. But what about the chap in the middle of the first row wearing what looks like a holster ??

Mmm, I am not sure.

I have emailed you the higher resolution picture for easier scrutiny.
