Kimberley Star, 'a'

John Thomas Crellin was born in Millom, Cumberland, in April 1872 and served during the Boer War with the Kimberley Town Guard, serving in No. 1 Redoubt during the Siege of Kimberley. Upon the raising of the Siege he joined the Kimberley Light Horse on 16 March 1900 and was allocated to ‘B’ Squadron. He served with the Kimberley Mounted Corps under Colonel Peakman as part of Mahon’s expedition to relieve Mafeking, and as such would have been involved in the Battle of Kraaipan, in which the unit suffered several casualties, and the battle of 16 May 1900 outside Mafeking. He was discharged on 8 June 1900, and subsequently enlisted in Scott’s Railway Guards on 11 February 1901 (also entitled to the clasps Relief of Mafeking and South Africa 1901). He died at Gatoooma, Southern Rhodesia, on 6 December 1926.
