I came across this interesting letter from 6 Nov 1901.

Does anyone know if this issue was resolved?

A little while ago, I pulled out Ackland's paperwork including that for his DCM - and there is no mention anywhere about the DCM gratuity. Nor is there any in H.Loxton's (DCM) limited paperwork. Quite frequently one sees the notation of the "War Gratuity" of a fiver when looking at service records - and that makes the absence of the DCM gratuity notation a little strange. Am I missing something here? Did Colonial DCM's not get the DCM gratuity?

I too pulled out my DCM winners (RG Sterling - Cape Police) papers and there is no mention made of any gratuity.

Did these chaps have to apply for it like their regular army compatriots or was it automatically granted?

Regards

Rory

I had a look in my copy of 'Recipients of the DCM" by Abbot 1975 edition and there is an awful lot about gratuities - but most of it dates to the Crimea/Mutiny, etc. However, on page xix it states that "Finally, an RW (Royal Warrant) of second of February, 1900 made provision for a 20 pound gratuity to recipients of the DCM on discharge, if they had not been granted an extra pension, or an annuity.". Perhaps we have been looking in the wrong places; could the gratuity be noted in the pay records?
