Lot 209 of the July Spink auction is a curious medal because the face of one of the clasps has been removed. I have never seen this done before.

The medal is to 25538 Sapr J A Chambers RE.

WO100/156p131 confirms the missing clasp is CC.

Good Morning David.....

I have two medals where this has happened...... Funny thing is they are both Cape Colony..... It is as if the solder has given way or it was not soldered very well in the first place..... One I had repaired at a local jewelry store the other I have not done anything.....

Yours looks like it has come loose on one side and become snagged on something and just broken off leaving a little bit of clasp left behind.....

Mike,

I have seen examples where the face becomes detached from the side mounts but this one is unusual in leaving part of the clasp behind.

Best wishes
David
